Object: Lace handkerchiefs.

Pippa is a mixed media artist, often inspired by the macabre. She started this project to challenge herself and her practice through new experience. She is aware that her work can sometimes be disturbing to view, and this set her the task of finding a place within the museum collections where she can express her own passions whilst showing respect for the history of the artefacts.

Pippa was inspired by the embroidered handkerchiefs that the soldiers bought as souvenirs and sent home to loved ones during the First World War. She found the seeking out of such delicate keepsakes as an interesting juxtaposition to the horrors of life on the Western Front. She reflects this through the use of delicate embroidery and beadwork to depict gore and the macabre.
