Object: Diaries, votive and religious objects.

Screenprint on Canaletto paper.

These screenprints focus on the relationship between the language of religion and the language of love using entries from the diary of Lieutenant Frederick Lynes, stationed in Mesopotamia between 1917 and 1919. Eve became interested in the language Lynes used to write about his wife, the nameless ‘Her’ in the diary and the language used in prayer, finding similarities in both. These words are paired with digitally composed images of religious objects used by soldiers from various timeframes in the Regiment’s history. The final screen-printed image presents a commentary on love as a form of religion, and how longing for one’s love and praying to God in a time of war can be seen as the same form of devotion.
