Objects; Buttons and badges.

Oil Pastel and Scribble drawing, digital edit.

Symbols and badges signal belonging and help to create an esprit de corps. Buttons and badges are ways of distinguishing different regiments and become highly symbolic and a source of pride. This regiment was designated the 9th Foot in 1751 and given the distinction of the figure of Britannia as its badge. These images reflect a sense of identity and pride whilst appealing to people in the present. There is the risk of the history of the regiment being forgotten, which should be avoided. Although the archives are a hidden gem, whilst talking with the curator, I realised that I wanted to make work that would honour and capture the pride from the people and the things that were valued so much in the past.
