Objects: Letters.
Oil on denim scraps, 50 x 40cm
For this project I looked into the Smith Brothers’ letters and created imagery in response. My own practice is surrealism based and I’d recently been looking into war artist Paul Nash; I decided to incorporate elements of his piece ‘We Are Making a New World’ to add a sense of authenticity to my paintings as well as to try new techniques. The most important element of my practice is sustainability, and while I normally paint on discarded objects e.g. frying pans & sofa cushions, this didn’t feel appropriate for this project. To get around this I made ‘canvasses’ out of denim scraps and painted on these which, in reflection, is a slight nod to war artists improvisation when it came to materials and it helps give each piece more life and character.
